Banking History in St. Louis, Missouri

In the mid-19th century, as St. Louis thrived as a major port and westward gateway, financial institutions began to emerge. The Southern Bank of St. Louis, chartered between 1856 and 1857 with $1,000,000 in capital, was an early cornerstone, opening in 1857 on Pine Street near Main. This bank, and others, helped lay the groundwork for a robust financial sector.

By the early 20th century, St. Louis had solidified its financial power. In 1921, the First National Bank in St. Louis, now Central Bank, proudly stood as the largest national bank west of the Mississippi River, boasting capital and surplus of $15 million. The city’s “Financial Row,” a stretch of Broadway, became the epicenter of this activity, home to institutions like First National Bank, St. Louis Union Trust Co., Mississippi Valley Trust Co., and Boatmen’s Bank.

A pivotal moment arrived with the creation of the Federal Reserve System. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (8th District) opened in May 1914, initially operating from the Boatmen’s Bank Building. It quickly made its mark, issuing its first loan of $1 million on November 18 and establishing critical clearing services. By 1925, the St. Louis Fed opened its iconic headquarters building, strategically located at Broadway and Locust streets, anchoring the city’s “Financial Row” and serving the Eighth District’s extensive banking network.

The latter half of the 20th century brought significant consolidation to the St. Louis banking scene. The 1980s saw Boatmen’s Bancshares rise to become the largest bank group in Missouri, notably acquiring Centerre Bancorporation. This period redefined the local banking landscape as smaller institutions merged into larger regional powerhouses.

In the modern era, while large national banks like Fifth Third Bank, U.S. Bank, and Chase continue to operate and expand, the community banking spirit remains strong. Institutions like CNB St. Louis Bank, Midwest BankCentre, Carrollton Bank, and Central Bank continue to offer personalized, local services, fostering strong relationships with businesses and residents. St. Louis has also become home to specialized institutions and those focused on community impact, such as the St. Louis Community Credit Union. This credit union, and others, target “underbanked” areas, often grappling with historic disinvestment, and focus on community development rather than just commercial lending growth.

St. Louis has the enduring commitment of community institutions to serve the area’s diverse needs, continually shaping its economic destiny.
